Councilmember Anita Bonds and the D.C. Council to Recognize the National “Rally to End Racism” on the 50th Anniversary of the Assassination of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Encourages D.C. to Participate
WASHINGTON, DC – The Council of the District of Columbia will recognize the upcoming April 4, 2018 national “Rally to End Racism” on the 50th Anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a ceremonial resolution reflecting their commitment to eradicate racism in the criminal justice, educational, health care, housing, and social justice arenas.
The “Rally to End Racism and Commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Assassination of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Recognition Resolution of 2018,” calls on all people to unite together to “dismantle systemic racism, increase economic equality for all citizens, and foster a more inclusive American community that builds upon Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “Poor People’s Campaign”. The measure was introduced by At-Large Councilmember Anita Bonds, a long-standing advocate for social justice and equality.
“In the spirit of Dr. King, I encourage all residents to join us as we stand together in peace to denounce all forms of racism, bigotry, sexism, xenophobia, anti- Semitism, ageism, classism, homophobia, and all forms of prejudice against another…” stated Councilmember Bonds.
The Rally to End Racism will be held on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at the National Mall Stage (Washington Monument Grounds). A prayer walk will begin at 7:00 AM at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, followed by an Interfaith service at 8:00 AM, and will then proceed with a solemn march down Ohio Dr. to the rally on the National Mall. The event is sponsored by faith-based groups including the National Council of the Churches and the National African American Clergy Network.
